David Hockney’s Kaleidoscope

As seen in The Villager on November 17th, 2023. Article by Avalon Bellos

On the cover of this week’s article by The Villager, is the iconic David Hockney and his swimming pool. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1937, Hockney began his artistic journey exploring the world around him, focusing on the rhythms and colors that dance along the lines of art and life. With roots in a Northern England upbringing, Hockney showed signs of artistic sensibility and creativity at a young age that later manifested into his long and successful career.

Over time and several relocations of his life, the landscapes of Hockney’s experiences became the platform for his work. Focusing on the earlier palettes of England to later hues of Southern California to the city lights of New York, there is great detail, brushstroke and color significance in each of his works. A multi-faceted artist as well, Hockney uses an iPad as a medium for creation, unafraid of the tools of the expanding world. He “challenges the dichotomy between the traditional and the digital, affirming his role as a pioneer in the fusion of art, technology and philosophy” (Bellos, 25).

Avalon Bellos states, “David Hockney’s life and art constitute a kaleidoscope odyssey through the realms of creativity, technology, and human connection… Hockney emerges not just as a n artist but as a philosopher, inviting us to contemplate the profound beauty that exists in the intersection of art and life” (p. 25).

Hockney’s work is currently on view at the MoMA, and DTR Modern SoHo.
