Donald Sultan: Unconventionally Unique

Born in 1951 in Asheville NC, Donald Sultan began his artistic journey that bloomed in the University of North Carolina and the Art Institute of Chicago. In the 80s and 90s he emerged internationally, exhibiting across the United States and eventually globally. His works now are held in permanent collections of over 50 major international museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and he is sought after in countless auctions, gallery spaces and private collections.
Influenced by brilliant artists like Josef Beuys and Albero Burri, he incorporates everyday materials and commonly viewed natural phenomenons with intellectual tapestry, color contrasts and scale. Avalon Bellos states, “Sultan’s fascination with forms such as circles and sqaures becomes a meditation on order and chaos, pushing the boundaries of what is visually conceivable. In his hands, these shapes cease to be mere geometric entities; they become portals into the complexities of the human experience” (p. 17).
